How To Differentiate ISTPs vs INFJs (And More)
A universal guide to telling the difference between types who share the same functions and orientation (I/E) but differ in rational (judging) and perceiving (perceptual) dominant functions. This video also applies to: ESTP vs ENFJ; ENTP vs ESFJ; ENTJ vs ESFP; ESTJ vs ENFP; ISFP vs INTJ; INTP vs ISFJ; ISTJ vs INFP.

About me:
Hi, I'm Harry, and I'm intensely passionate about personality typing and self-development - so much so that I have created my own Jung-inspired system, taking a more high-resolution look at the factors making up personality.
Through Cognitive Personality Theory I examine the underlying mechanisms behind cognition, and the means through which a single type can have limitless individual variation - I believe type itself is just a set of cognitive predispositions that can according to the needs of the situation be overcome.
I don't believe any type is limited in what they can achieve, but have noticed sensationalist attitudes and internet trends propagating a culture in which type-development is actively discouraged in favour of conforming to simplistic archetypes. Through CPT I hope to dispel various myths and oversimplifications of what constitutes personality type, and along the way encourage a healthier attitude towards type that allows a person to become not who they are told they are, but rather who they want to be.

Not quite sure where I tend to fit out of these, but I do find myself often in the Diver detached from reality / in my head. But at other times, I see myself flipping into ENFJ, especially when entertaining guests or at a get together with a higher concentration of know friends than new acquaintances. But I also feel like the default at times. And I don’t know where this fits (I should rewatch the video), but I do strongly value logic, thinking, and have a strong interest in science and maths, watching a lot of videos on things like astrophysics or else continuing math studies as a form of recreation but deeply rooted in a craving to understand the concrete world (perhaps to overcome inferior Te handicaps) and to entertain abstract concepts like hyperdimensions (perhaps to satiate Ne exploration). I don’t know why (well, I do) INFP’s are stereotyped as being allergic to math, logic, and hard sciences; math, in particular, is a system of abstract symbolism and communication, similar to linguistics and etymology which are stereotypically enjoyed by INFP’s. My guess, and this is coming from my personal experience, is when you come from a place of being misunderstood the overreaction to that is to learn as much as you can (sort of an enneagram 5 strategy [many INFP’s have a 5 wing]) so that you are better prepared to communicate effectively when called; same goes for the Te handicap, if you experience enough pain from failing to be decisive/effective, then you’re going to start leaning into ways of overcoming that handicap, and math, logic, etc can give you an advantage; it might still expend a lot of energy requiring rest/withdrawal, but at least you can work smarter than harder.

    Hi

As an INFP and an enneagram 4 (who’s “sin” is envy), I did grow up feeling a sense of victimhood at the hands of the universe, surrendering to the “fact” that I will always experience unfairness and being defined by resentment toward other people who had it all together and were just the “lucky” ones who the universe favored and whose luck I would never share. And I would dip into emotional disregulation and share sob stories and in kind of a gross way enjoy the empathy that I would receive. Now in my 30’s, hopefully more matured but by no means having arrived, I quit commiserating at some point in my life because I saw how it not only disempowered me from my own personal agency, but I didn’t like that I was negatively affecting other people’s emotional state for the sake of (however unconsciously) receiving their care, sympathy, or pity. I’m now much more in control of my life, rejecting fatalism, and embracing my inherent (as it is inherent for every human being) ability to shape who I am, what I do, and what I can hope to achieve. It’s still hard not to envy “successful” people, but I don’t let that discourage my from just taking a leap of faith trying to achieve things for myself anymore. Now I am extremely hesitant to share what’s going wrong or has gone wrong in my life because it makes me really uncomfortable that I might be doing it for the sake of empathy, and now I might be to the opposite extreme of not reaching out in a healthy way when I do need help. I don’t *think* I’m a narcissist, but what if I am, or what if I used to be?

  • @Joanna-gg4qx

Well it’s ironic actually; I do believe each INFJ develops their own mission to advocate. This becomes apparent in time. I’ve realised mine is now to unify an deeper understanding of the natural world, and actually goes largely against the grain of what the modern world *is* trying to achieve by assimilation with technology. I believe everything needs to be taken back down to the roots. It’s made it difficult for me to live in the city nowadays, happiness for me comes from being in nature. So actually it’s kind of made me go the other way. I have always been adaptable - but have realised where I need to be now because of the trial and error of many experiences. The struggles I find with being an INFJ is how we compare so much data and spend a long time concluding and developing our convictions, once firm they’re pretty robust because we believe we’ve looked at the bigger picture in order to conclude it. Adaptability for me will derive from the notion that the universe is by principle - endless, so we can never know the full truth. Must maintain an open mind.

  • @IAmThanSolo

Making me doubt the INTJ typing of Ayn Rand, who was combative, arrogant, pushy, and self-sure of her ideas. But then again she did differ to big thinkers that she esteemed, primarily Aristotle and John Locke, and may have just been so developed in her thought that she was ready with an a counter-argument if someone contradict logical thought in her opinion. She also wasn’t chaotic or experimental, sticking to a specific strand of philosophy that didn’t deviate from prior concrete conclusions over time. But, I don’t know, maybe ENTP would be a better fit, although she lacked the social decorum and charm that ENTP’s possess, often being rudely dismissive of people she considered idiots. And Objectivism, you would assume, is much more about external Te absolutes in reality than about a systematized Ti framework.

My understanding of typology was getting stale, but the concepts in this video are refreshing it and giving me totally new ideas to chew on. I’ve been stuck in the 8 function hierarchical way of viewing things, but this shows how much interplay is happening between functions, even functions that are on opposite ends of the latter. The Fi enabling objectivity in Ti part blew my mind.

I have taken the test 3 or 4 times and it's always INTJ...I don't study the other 15 types...I study my own. Certainly nobody lives an identical life and there are instances that will cause one to have a certain issue that others may not within the type. You are still by percentage score an INTJ. I think the margin of error is applied for those swings. I am an INTJ...not a super human egoist....just me, the only way I know to be.

This CPT view you present makes things much more clear. I'm much more confident in the type I have guessed for the people in my life after your explanation of the cognitive pairings. Are you trying to confirm my biases? xD. I also want to note, your passion is obvious. sorry for being a bit off topic, i have a question about divergent Fi dom (INFP/ISFP), is this a okay example of them in action? ofc not all diverge Fi dom will be like this and sorry if this is a bit stereotypical (even tho i am trying not to be stereotypical), i am not very knowledgeable (that's why i am asking) and i want to make sure if my understanding is spot on.since their auxiliary lens is bypassed / not realized, the individual may not be so attuned to the self, the self may not be realize until the individual experience things (in external reality) that eventually causes self realization, realizing what they want, what they want to achieve, what they're valuing, self questioning which may spark inspiration, motivation and self reformulation (reforming preexisting belief / value or creating new value based of what they're able to learn from experiences which will help them to navigate the external reality better), but before the self is realized, they will probably be an abstract, imaginative / idealist person, that is not very attuned to both self and external reality (which causes them to be a bit more plain, and prone to be a puppet for others / taken advantage of, a bit more gullible), also can be uncompromising and unwilling to adapt (e.g. hating rules or unwilling to adapt / resistant to change because it disrupt or disallow them to do things that they're intrested in). Niche interest can be something as well, like... the individual is interested in their niche which they definitely may take pride off (and share it to others) and sometimes even feel angry if others doesn't do things that is similar to how the individual do it or when others do things not as efficiency as them or the individual is so interested in their niche that they dislike everything else that does not align with it, Similar to Fi authority given that their dominant functions is more divergent which means more rigid than default. (sum (what i am trying to say): more scattered and abstract, self not constantly reconceptualized or refined, more static but it's still an ongoing concept (concept: their value, what's right and wrong, their understanding and the way they're dealing and interact with external reality), it's not entirely static and lastly, self realization seems to be very important) thank you...

I tested as both INFJ and INTJ and still confused. I feel people, sensitive and emotional. I go out of my way to do things for others ~such a giver, at times get abused for being such, empathize and careful what people think of me -my image and avoid confrontation. Gullible -I don’t trust but gives benefit of the doubt. l love Psychology just because I can read other people’s minds, intentions and how it works- to my advantage. BUT I’m distant. I’m not a good listener. I get drained with people’s presence. Business minded, goal and future oriented. Sapiosexual. I’d rather be my own company. I’m too stubborn to have things my way. Too FIXED once I decide. Follow my brain. I’m inflexible in most of the things. Extremely perfectionist/OC .Organized. Prepare way ahead. I am too detailed with what I want and will do things to materialize it to the point it’s annoying. I try hard to get what I want. IDFK being alone in public, having a meal, going to places etc, that it comes out weird. I’m systematic, logical~ I can formulate find ways to create, and simplify things to be efficient, cold and (secretive my dark side-I don’t follow tradition, break values/rules for my benefit). The “brain” and leads but without having to interact with people. They say I’m too independent and an Alpha. I also think this way. I’m cold to people most of the time, alone time most is a MUST and silence the outside world. I love quiet places alone. I’m too focused everytime I work like no other people exist at the moment. I rarely reach out FIRST. Have too high boundaries. Sometimes, don’t care about people. Not updated with other people’s lives nor feel the need to get them updated to mine. And lastly, I’d admit I try my best to be nice because I know I’m NOT LIKABLE . I’m both and been confused. It’s contradicting. I possess both .HELP!!!!😭😭😭

Now with network theory everything is coming more full circle. When it comes to Fi, I think I have the FiSi dominant functions with the backdrops of NiFi all the time. That's I guess, my dominant (convergent) network. I'm a concrete/specific feeler but I also have very vivid imagination (esp when I was younger) and I'm interested in more abstract and archetypal view of Fi. So I kind of synergize both, but always in a way which is specific and makes sense, to me at least. I still don't know if i'm more protectve of my FiSi or NiFi tho 😅 Edit: that being said, now i wonder how INTJ does the same thing, having FiSi side network? I.e synergize but with NiFi core...

I’m not likely an ISFP. But, when I write, I often dip down into FiNi to fuel my creativity. I recently wrote a poem entitled “Flight of the Phoenix”. In this poem, I wrote about the life journey of the phoenix, which was an idealized embodiment of myself, in that moment. I even used Ni to connect different symbolic representations within my mind, which I am attached to, together and I laid out the structure of the poem with a timeline, which I thought best propelled the journey, as the writing progressed. Of course, I did this very quickly (within 30-45) minutes, so this was still being lead with my Ne dominance (ENFP). Your network theory very well explains how we dip down into various networks naturally (some more naturally than others) and this forms our overall internal network structure. Each type has their own unique complex network structure and will access different networks from different positions, depending on the situation and the way that person reacts to it. This will always be unique to the individual, as well, because each person has had their on experiences and have learned to cope with things in their own way. So, they will be dipping down into whichever network works best for them and also with their own unique flavor. It could be less or more intense and also, depending on the level of development, could yield varying degrees of results. It’s so interesting how all of this comes together. I spend a lot of time playing with different “types”. I can take on a role and even become that type. Of course, this has caused me to mistype many times. But understanding the primary process I use to do this is helpful. It took me interacting with someone within the community over a prolonged amount of time and having my language pattern observed by multiple sources, in order for me to be able to conclude what my core type is. It turns out I’m a divergent ENFP and I was thought to be an INFJ and an INTP at different points. I mistook myself as having convergent Ti, because I had been dipping down into those networks, in order to try to find my type. Of course, INFJ feels more natural, since it is within my dominant network. But INTP was a little more tiring for me to stay in over a longer period of time. TiSi isn’t as natural for me, so it’s difficult for me to use it successfully and maintain it. NiTi, of course, is a more natural dip for me and I can stay within that network for quite some time. Still, it feels as though NeTe is always running in the background and my Fi authority is still propelling me forward and I never lose sight of who I am

I love your take on the mechanics of cognitive functions 8:31 I have a question, here you give an example of taking an internal idea into tangible reality, what makes it broad instead of focused and specific ? By that I mean why isn't it Ni into Se, when do we say the scope is broad versus focused ? I'll watch your videos on that but I still wanted to ask to apply to real life situations. Thank you

don't get how those networks are built. why is INFJ at the top of yang Si/Fi Fi/Ni when they only have one of those functions in their ego...

Like if you are INTP and like sudoku, chess and crosswords.

Best definitive explanation of the way ISTP and INFJ are differentiated while also explaining why they have similar aspects. The positioning of these being conscious vs compulsive is phenomenal. Great work!

Thank you so much for this. I have been struggling to determine my type for a while and this has helped me determine which functions I use in a compulsory vs volitional way, which has cleared up so much.

Then I'm not an INTP. .😅😅. .it's just my ego that drives me on being smart like my father. .😅😅😅. .I'm more of an INFJ and yet still I'm not so sure. .I prefer thinking about the feelings of others rather than giving them some sharp words. .😅😅

I am an ientp-a, nobody knows what I actually think, I argue when I'm feeling bored, I'm unorganized and organized at the same time. It's fun

Just wanted to say, CPT has high visual potential - someday there will be cool animations showing how networks works, thats for sure. Cheers!

Hey man, I saw your video on the four types of ENTPs which really opened my eyes. I used to be an ENTP but then turned into an ESTJ. I think I may have became a Convergent ENTP like you were mentioning. Is my hypothesis possible? I kind of hate being an ESTJ I just feel really uncreative and not stimulated.

@@MunirToklu ESTJs and ENTPs are the same cognitive networks in common. I don't think the dominant network would have switched with the auxiliary though. It's more just important to bear in mind the two types aren't really that different in cognitive processes - I myself have an ENTJ auxiliary network that is sometimes stronger than others, but across situations it's never my dominant network
